Ice and Water Shield is a peel and stick, waterproof membrane that is typically applied on valleys, eaves, low-slope roofs, and any other locations that may accumulate snow and water. It helps to seal the roof and protect it from leaks, windblown rain, and ice dams. It is manufactured from a polymer-modified bitumen with a sticky film on one side; the sticky side allows it to create a secure seal when applied properly. The fact that it is a fully sealing product is one of the things that makes ice and water shield different from other underlayments; no matter what direction the water comes from, it can’t get underneath!
While typically not applied to an entire roof (although it can be, as long as there is proper attic ventilation), ice and water shield is an integral part of your protective roof system. One exception is low slope roofs; YES will always apply ice and water shield under shingles that are between at 2/12 and 3/12 slope to ensure it is protected.
